Life as we knew it has shifted drastically, which means for many stress has been a constant companion which is understandable.
However, since stress is a know contributor to a weakened immune system as well as a risk faction for disease and mental health challenge doing things on a regular basis to lower it is absolutely needed.
Thankfully, the number one tool for bringing your stress level down quickly is one that is also right under your nose....your breath.
Slow deep breathing is a sure fire way to help yourself feel more centered.
Next time you feel yourself getting overwhelmed try this:
With the onset of the global pandemic of COVID-19, to say our lives have changed drastically is an understatement. Most of the world is being asked to stay at home, maintain distance from others when out in public, and maintain high standards of hygiene to slow the spread of the virus.
Likely millions of others, you may now be working from home which is a big shift to your daily routine and schedule. And for now this is a key part that you can play to help flatten the curve and reduce the number of people worldwide that are impacted.
During this unprecedented time, it is vital that you do everything you can to stay healthy by keeping your immune system up and your stress levels down! While you know I am always a huge advocate for self care, I am suggesting that you kick those efforts into overdrive immediately and over these coming weeks.
Here's some ideas to help you with that:
You've probably heard that Yoga has lots of tools for stress relief right? IT DOES!
But if you are feeling so stressed out that your mind is running a mile a minute and your TO-DO list stretches into next month it can be very difficult to sit and meditate.
I can totally relate to that and so can many of my clients! And if that sounds at all familiar to you too I have a powerful tool to share with you called Lotus Mudra.
...
You may not have realized it, but sitting for long hours (especially with weak, slouched posture) can be hard on your heart both physically and energetically.
Think about it: when you sit down not much is happening in your body so your heart rate and your metabolism slow down a lot. Over time, this can cause:
Since your body and mind are so inter-connected, being slouched over a keyboard for most of the day can often leave you: foggy in the head, stressed out, low energy, struggling with lack of motivation or inspiration, or heavy with feelings of sadness, apathy, or worry.
Left unchecked over time this could easily lead to a whole host of issues with your health inside and out! Unfortunately, in people that sit for more than 6 hours everyday the rates of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity, insomnia, and even...
Technology is a staple in our modern lives, which is extremely helpful, but can definitely take a toll on your body.
Spending long hours sitting and working on your computer or phone can easily leave you dealing with:
You may not have realized it, but your mood and energy is strongly influenced by your posture. This means that slouching can:
Your mind and body are powerfully connected. Which is why strengthening your core muscles so that you sit, stand, and walk taller is super important to your overall health and vitality!
When you hold strong posture you:
Breathe better, look and feel leaner, have less back and body pain, ...
So how did the first month of 2020 go for you?
I'll admit it was kind of a weird month for me, but I'm settling into my groove again now which feels great.
If you are like me (and most people LOL) you start the year off with big gusto towards your intentions and then things kinda slow down when routine kicks back in. Sound familiar?
And like for so many people having a consistent exercise, yoga, or meditation practice is often part of the plan each year. Was that the case for you?
If so, here are 3 tips to help you get into the habit of practicing self care more often:
1) Decide how many times a week you want to do the practice and write it in your day planner at the beginning of the week. Note each time you do it throughout the week so you can see if you met your goal by week end.
2) Schedule the sessions into your planner/calendar as a NON-NEGOTIABLE appointment with yourself! You deserve your attention right? YES!!!
3) Set an alarm in your phone to...
Life can throw a lot at us, especially at work. And when we are in the thick of things with long TO DO lists, clients, and distractions it can be challenging to be grateful for all of it....am I right?
However, if we manage to keep our cool and approach each moment with an open mind and a willingness to learn we can. This approach, which is called the growth mindset, is a powerful lens to look through (and thankfully one we can develop and hone).
The essence of the growth mindset is to always be looking for the lesson in the situation so that we can learn and grow and become the fullest version of our self.
So by taking a step back and looking at the situation from a wider lens we can learn to ask better open ended questions such as: What can I learn from this? What is the universe trying to tell me? What tools do I have to handle this situation?
These are far different from the opposite fixed mindset that asks closed ended questions such as: Why is this happening to me?...
If so, you are definitely not alone and the truth is that way too many people feel this way!
Chronic stress can wreak havoc on your health and happiness, yet is something that far too many people deal with on a daily basis simply because they don't yet know what to do to ease the burden.
While some stress is helpful to get us up and motivated to take action, if left unchecked, stress can quickly take a toll on your body and your mind.
Take my client Emily for example: who when dealing with major family stress developed lower back issues and sciatica pain. Since it is very common for problems to manifest as physical symptoms it was essential that we integrated relaxation techniques plus stretches and exercises to help her feel like herself again and get out of pain. And thankfully she did!
Far too many people wait until they are in pain or are super stressed to take action because they think they just don't have the time, know how, or...
