That dreaded morning anxiety, where you wake up with your heart pounding and mind racing, can feel like the captain of the stress express has taken control. It’s something I’ve battled with and learned to manage. I discovered that this anxiety is often a symptom of a dysregulated nervous system—a signal that your body needs care.

Recognizing Anxiety as a Signal

Instead of viewing anxiety as a problem, recognize it as a message from your nervous system. This shift in perspective helps you address the root cause rather than just the symptoms. Anxiety often whispers to us through physical sensations. We can address the underlying issues by tuning into these subtle signals before they escalate.

Tools to Manage Anxiety

Here are some practical steps to manage morning anxiety:

  1. Shift Your Language: Instead of saying "I am anxious," say "I am feeling anxious." This small change creates a separation between your identity and feelings, allowing you to manage them more effectively.

  2. Physical Touch and Breathing: Place your hands on areas where you feel anxiety and breathe deeply. Use techniques like Dr. Andrew Weil’s 4-7-8 method: inhale for 4 counts, hold for 7, and exhale for 8. This helps regulate your nervous system.

  3. Morning Routine: Stick to a grounding morning routine. Avoid social media first thing in the morning. Engage in meditation, journaling, or movement to align your mind and body.

  4. Move Your Body: Physical activity helps shift your state. Whether dancing, yoga, or a quick workout, moving your body can help release anxious energy.

  5. Evening Unwind: Create an evening routine to help your body and mind wind down. Avoid screens and engage in relaxing activities like reading, journaling, or spending time with pets.

Holistic Approach to Wellness

Combining morning routines, exercise, mental fitness, and evening unwind forms the Mindful Strength Method. This holistic approach supports your nervous system at the deepest level, helping you navigate life's challenges with resilience.

Morning anxiety doesn’t have to control your life. You can create a sense of calm and control by tuning into your body’s signals and incorporating these practices. Remember, it’s about regulating your nervous system consistently to prevent anxiety from taking over.
